I’ve shared this particular meditation verbally with many clients over the years, and was prompted recently to write it down to share more widely with you all! This is a perfect and simple meditation for any time you are seeking greater clarity and focus, struggling to sort thoughts through confusion, or simply reflecting on your life in preparation for big events such as the end of the year or a birthday. Times of transition are excellent times to sort through life, and sorting objects helps provide a focus point for scattered and disorganized thoughts, while at the same time literally engaging in the act of sorting.

Materials

  • At least 100 multicolored beads, different types of beans, etc. You want the items to be small enough for your fingers to easily sort into categories. Color is the easiest way to sort, but you may also have items that sort by different type, such as several types of beans. The more items you have, the longer, deeper and likely more profound the sorting process will be.
  • A large surface on which to spread the items and sort – a table surface or floor works well.
  • Journal and pen to capture any thoughts. Alternately you can set a voice memo to record any thoughts you speak aloud.
  • Quiet space and uninterrupted time for yourself.

NOTE: this activity also lends itself well to a group gathering. Sometimes sorting in a group as you all talk and reflect, can be another fantastic way of processing together.

Instructions:

The instructions themselves are quite simple:

  1. Lay out your sorting materials on the prepared surface. You may want to light a candle and set an intention, play some music, put a soothing essential oil in your diffuser, or whatever rituals and practices help you create a sacred space.
  2. Spend a few moments with the eyes closed, taking a few deep breaths and centering your thoughts.
  3. You may want to write a few intentions in the journal you have prepared, or speak aloud some words regarding what in particular you are hoping to sort or reflect upon.
  4. When you are ready, begin sorting the objects by color or type, simply allowing your thoughts to go wherever they are drawn.
  5. Use your journal or recorder to capture your thoughts and ideas.
  6. If you are still in process once you’ve sorted all the items, you can place them all back in the container they came from to shake them up and start sorting again until you feel complete.
